Born in Center, Texas in 1944 and partially raised in Tenaha, Beth Duke was encouraged to draw to keep her out of trouble. Her grandmother, Ocie Ola Duke, drew farm animals in church to keep the 2-year-old quiet. And so, a life-long love affair with drawing horses and cattle began. Through the years this only child and only grandchild freely roamed her grandparents’ East Texas farm and learned a keen appreciation for light and shadow. Her family moved to Houston where Beth’s artistic ability was "discovered" by her first grade teacher, Lilly Bell Stillwell, who also taught art.
Beth has two children, Trey and Kim, and two grandchildren, Jason and Cameron. Daughter-in-law Stephanie Hunold helps with marketing and presentation of Beth’s work.
Texas Heritage, oil 20x24
Beth's primary medium is oil, but she also works in pen and ink, pencil, and watercolor. Through the years, she studied with Jewel Denney Yarborough, Helen Coffey, Marge Brichler, Lajos Marcos, William Kalwick. She thanks artists Dick Turner and Pat Bateman for their invaluable critique.
Beth Duke’s favorite images are still to be found in rural Texas. Browse her galleries and meet critters large and small, even some 2-legged ones.
Beth also works on commission. Contact her to discuss your project.
